Using the Internet as my Personal Shopper

Josh's birthday is in one week. He will give me no hints as to what he would like as a gift. (Actually, he says "you got me a TV" which I did, but that's not his birthday gift.)

Any thoughts on cool things out in the universe that he would appreciate?

If you don't know him well, he:
- is a Knight and is interested in Medieval things and generally anything involving swords
- enjoys the fiction of George R R Martin and Katherine Kurtz
- enjoys RPGs, and is involved in a White Wolf/Werewolf LARP right now
- just got a new blue ray player
- doesn't play video games
- is the primary cook in our house

Suggestions?

Rattan? Armor bits? A free helm-polishing? (God that sounds lewd...)

I'll take a free helm polishing if you know anyone giving them out :O)

I'd sign up for that and I don't even have a helm.

I'm thinking mabe some Knight accouterment, such as Bits for his white belt if there are any to make it more period for his persona, I know he has spurs... I dunno.

Does he have white wolf specific dice?

Does he own the new Robin Hood on blue ray?

If he reads alot is a nook or kindle something he might like?

There are white wolf specific dice???

[identity profile] decimusaurelius.livejournal.com 2011-02-09 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, for instance I have a set of "Changeling" Dice that have a butterfly intead of a one, and are appropriate colors The sell vampire dice and werewolf dice as well. Look on amazon, they may still have them.

Yes, there are game specific "branded" dice.
But the LARP doesn't use dice at all.

Any particular cookbooks he might like? GodeCookery might have some suggestions for medieval ones.

Or is there some particular recipe he makes that would be a lot easier with some great kitchen toy?

Does he keep his knives sharp? Would a sharpener help?

(Just brainstorming)

Thinkgeek.com has some fairly entertaining dice items. My friends got me a D20 version of the magic 8 ball. It provides snarky answers like "Yes, if 3rd edition". They also got me a D20 with an LED inside which lights when you roll a 20. Not quite a match for White Wolf, but fun gamer-geek type presents.

I haven't tried it, but there is an RPG based on George Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series.

If he doesn't have them yet, the Dreamsongs collection of Martin's short fiction (2 volumes) might be a good choice.

Again, this one isn't something I've tried, but there is an RPG based on Kurtz Deryni books.

The Kurtz RPG is a good hint. Thanks!

As a guiding principal, I'm trying to focus more on giving "experiences" rather than "things" as gifts. Things accumulate, take up space, and are often just in the way.

Things like:

A trip (museum?)
A cooking class (if that's his bent)
A break from something he dislikes or a chance to do something he really enjoys.

Just a different spin.

Its a good spin.

Does he need new While wolf books?

Also, Since he is the primary cook...perhaps taking HIM on a Date to a nice restaurant you both want to try would be a good idea. I am sure someone would watch MonkeyButt ;)

Perhaps, if you knew someone who ran a gaming store, you could see about renting space there for a Father/Son or Family game night with all of his friends.
