Not yet.

I had to get to work this morning. [livejournal.com profile] kr4sh and I will go right after work. I promise.

How's #1 doing? Is it too early to have any idea?

All we know right now is that the turnout in the Southern part of the state is much lower than expected, while the turnout in the Northern, more rural, part of the state is somewhat higher than expected. Historically, this doesn't bode well for Question 1.

It could also mean, however, that there are higher populations of unemployed or elderly people in the Northern part of the state, who have more leisure during the daytime part of the day, and that people in Southern Maine, who tend to be younger and employed, will wait and vote after work.

In other words, its too soon to tell.

I will be so bold as to ask you to spread this around your networks, if I don't offend.

Much of the No on 1 staff has been working largely without pay for several weeks, as they pour all their available resources into literature, phone banking, TV and Radio ads, and other related expenditures. Regardless of whether or not the question passes or fails, its likely they will be unable to meet their entire payroll for some time to come. If you have an extra $5.00 (or more) to send their way, I know they'd love to have it. Click here to contribute

You don't offend at all. Helpfully, MassEquality has been plugging this and for money to be sent to Maine, but I'm not sure it's go ing to No on 1. I'll pass it on, and then click on the link myself.

Not a single one? Not a school board or town council election? Not voting for your mayor, or some obscure bond issue? I'm impressed.

Not one thing. Or I'd have voted this morning on the way to work. Our town meeting, school board and selectmen elections are at other times, and our tax override was combined with them, and we have no bonds to authorize at this time.

At 7:30 a.m. this morning. The polling place was surprisingly busy here in lovely NJ.

Voting is doo-doo.

You didn't read that GAO report yet, did you?

I'll keep doing it as long as it's a paper ballot, just to tell folks they can stuff it when I bitch, but for all purposes and intents there is no meaning in voting.

I have read the GAO report, but I'm also lucky enough to live in a state where we still mark paper ballots with a pen. I have to honestly say that I completely trust the voting process in my state, largely because I trust the people who administer it.

But I know that I'm one of the lucky ones in this country.

Huh... I remember using a machine when I lived in Portland... glad you don't.

We still require paper trails in Vermont... until the Feds challenge it.

You guys should secede with us.

C'mon. It'll be fun.

You *like* fun!

Like I said, I trust the process because I trust the people that run the process. (In Maine). I trust our Sec of state and our voting commission. I've worked as a poll watcher . I believe that (here) the process works.

Besides, I'm pretty sure our optical scanners were built back in the '60s.

We mark paper ballots with a pen, and then the ballots are read by an optical scanner (kind of like taking your SATs ... fill in the dot with the pen, fill it in completely, etc.). The ballots are kept as a paper trail, and normally there are 8-10 recounts in the state where everyone gets together in the local HS Gym or some such place and counts physical paper ballots.

You guys should secede with us.

Kind of tough, since we lack a common border.

Besides, that would deny Snowe and Collins the chance to continue to wreak havoc in the Senate. (I -heart- my liberal republican Senators).

I'll be voting sometime this evening, after work.

My sister has been denied her vote, over a snafu between Bergen and Hudson counties. Saying she is unhappy is being far too mild...

My sister has been denied her vote, over a snafu between Bergen and Hudson counties

Is this in New Jersey or New York?

I don't have the statute in front of me, but I believe she should be allowed to vote on what is called a "challenged" ballot -- that is, she votes, and then they set the ballot aside to try and figure out the problem after the fact.

Have her contact her State Secretary of State's office, and if they don't help, she should call 1-866-OUR-VOTE (the Election Protection Coalition, an arm of People for the American Way). They were actually founded to help make sure voters of color were not denied their rights, but they can be helpful in other voting-rights issues as well.

or try:
New York Civil Liberties Union
Executive Director: Donna Lieberman
125 Broad Street, 17th Floor
New York, NY 10004
Phone: 212-344-3005

or

ACLU of New Jersey
P.O. Box 750
Newark, NJ 07101
Phone: 973-642-2084

She should to do this Today, Right Now. Often organizaitons like EPC or the ACLU will send out folks to help her get it sorted out right on the spot, to make sure her vote is counted.

See, if I can just help one person vote, its all worthwhile.

If you don't mind me asking - who did she call?

So here is your challenge -- find a friend who hasn't voted yet and get them to go to the polls before they close at 8pm. Double cookies if they've never voted before!

I did deviate from my party line in order to vote for two friends of the family. Feel kind of bad about that but again, it is just local and they do do a good job.

and they do do a good job

That's the key, isn't it? Good people who actually care about what they're doing, and who want to do a good, ethical job.

"Party" is just a way to raise $$, to organize. I live in a state where we have two republican Senators, and I've yet to find a reason to vote against mine. She's smart, tough, gives a damn, is pro-choice, a member of the "Gang of 14" and I'm far prouder of her for having the balls (so to speak) to do things that are unpopular with her own party than I would be with a faceless Dem who never really has the power to make things change.
