Mad Men and Cell Phone Users

Yesterday I noticed (not for the first time) that some people, when having animated conversations on well-hidden cell phones, are indistinguishable from madmen.

Home sick from work today. Going back to bed now.

Jon and I had an interesting experience once upon a time...we were walking down the sidewalk, and a large man was walking towards, waving his arms, shouting, and staggering back and forth. We soon realized he was on a cellphone, but I'm not sure it made it any better. (Actual transcription of his conversation: "No, listen. Listen! I took the rent money. But I didn't fuck her.") A few days later I was walking on the same stretch of sidewalk, and a large madman, if you will, was walking towards me. He looked into a window he was passing, looked at me, and said "You've got tinfoil all over your head! What's up with that? Heh." (We were in front of a beauty salon.) I'll take crazy over rude cellphone use any day.

Both the mad, and a cell phone user:

1. Talk to people that aren't there.
2. Hear voices.
3. Gesticulate inappropriately.
4. Call unwelcome attention to themselves.

But the mad can do it for free.... so who's the real fool now?

This is not a new observation. Several years ago, a friend of mine wanted to start a program which gave out cell phones to street people on the theory that passers-by will be less uncomfortable with someone screaming "Bitches! You're all bitches! BIIII CHEEEEHHHZZZZZ!!!!" into a cell phone than into thin air.

Never got the funding. Stupid government.
