I didn't get a chance to reply back last night: you're right that whatmay work for one kid may not work for another. It sounds like you nay have to try different things until you find what works for E.
That said, you may discover that your ultimate strategy may not work on the first time. If his goal is to garner your attention by goofing off, he may have fun in your absence, but he didn't really get what he wanted (substitute whatever method you decide upon here).
And it may break your heart to hear him cry, but that's tough love, toddler style. =)
