Now its a woodlot....

There is a long story behind this photo, but the short form is this:

I grew up on a 90+ acre farm in Maine, (here's an aerial photo from several years ago) which was in a very forested and very undeveloped area. Recently, the two parcels of land that are next to ours were sold -- one was sold as a 40+ acre parcel to people we know, and the other as a 19+ acre parcel to people we don't.

I've had nightmares (real, actual nightmares) that this 19 acre parcel would be turned into a housing development, and if I could have found the money to buy it I would have, but the purchase price for those 19 acres was nearly as much as we paid for our house. Now it seems (crosses fingers) that its only going to be developed into three lots. Construction on the lot nearest our land has started (as you can see here).

It grieves me in ways I can't easily express to see these trees come down. This woodland was my playground during my entire childhood, and these trees were my friends, my playmates, my hiding places, my castles, my imaginary world.

I understand completely. The semi-wild areas on the Jersey Shore where I used to ramble, play and generally get lost as a kid have been plowed under for multiple ugly housing developments. Every time I drive down to the Ocean County Courthouse I see that and get sad.

Gotta have Progress, right?

Yeah, I've been terrified that the people who own the land surrounding ours will do the same. They guard the land hawkishly but they're middle aged and don't appear to have any heirs. I have nightmares about having a neighbor; not being able to forge in the evening or shout at the moon...

sad

I feel your pain. The last of the wooded area that I played in as a child was just plowed down last week. For two stinking houses, two really ugly houses that are going to house two really stupid families who don't care a bit that my trees are gone. suck!

Sorry about your trees.
