My hair is really bugging me today. No idea why. I finally found a clip deep in my backpack and now have it clipped up in what I'm fairly sure is an unattractive way. But at least its not bugging me.

I quoted John Updike today as my title quote for my last post, and now he's dead. Does anyone even notice the quotes I put as the subject of my posts?

I noticed the quote. I considered commenting on my idea of what kind of dreams Updike probably had, but thought it too snarky. I suppose that means it's the end of an era... John Updike and Philip Roth; the literary monuments to the monumental self-absorption of the Baby Boomer male...

I constantly marvel at them, at how apt they are, and I wonder where in the world you find them. :-)

I must admit, I could never stomach Updike's work. I used to read the New Yorker, cover to cover, and I never checked who the author was. But I often would stumble through a chunk of turgid prose, halt, and check the masthead. Sure enough...

(OK, the Art Critic is a popinjay too. But at least he's interesting.)

Updike and Roth weren't Boomers (born in 1932 and 1933, respectively), and their oeuvre struck me as focusing more on American mid-century angst. But I was a medievalist, so what do I know :-D

How does that work? I've long been impressed by them. What exactly are you googling? Sentiments? Authors? Half-remembered quotes? How do you get Google to disgorge all these great quotes?

I saw the quote, and then hours later saw Updike was dead and wondered if you'd heard about his death that much before I did.
