E has had three suppers tonight. I sense a growth spurt in the works.

Also, this may be a dumb question but is there any way to make my laptop not go into sleep mode when I close it? I would like to be able to continue downloads even when E closes the computer.

Depends on the laptop... Check the various power and brand-specific control panels to see if you can find an option for it.

However, many do it because of the potential for damaging heat buildup while the screen is closed, as the area under keyboard may be used to help cool the system. So in some cases, no it's not possible to turn it off.

The brute-force method is to disable the switch/sensor that detects when the screen is closed... But I'm guessing you really don't want to go that route.

I have found the "off switch" in the control panel, but I'll also keep the heat buildup thing in mind. Mostly, its that when I'm downloading off the Tivo I'd like to be able to let it run for an hour or so with the lid closed, or have the download continue even if E decides that the computer needs to be closed. (He's a completest like that).

If that particular model allows you to run it with the lid closed, you are probably fine, it was designed to.

Cooler is better when talking electronics, so I wouldn't do it all the time unless you have extra cooling. But for occasional use, you should be good.

I think somewhere in one of the tabs under Power or Display on the control panel there is a set of radio buttons, one of them should be for the hibernate function. (I'm assuming Windows.)

Yep, right there under "Power Options" - thanks!

oh, good! That's about the only level of computer question I can try to answer. :)
