We used to sing this song every night at bedtime at 4-H camp. It still brings me back to the smell of campfire smoke and the comfort of simplicity and a time when life was uncomplicated.

It is, of course, a Shaker song.

One of the most memorable moments of my life was sitting in the Shaker meetinghouse at Sabbathday Lake and hearing the half-dozen or so surviving Shakers sing this song, with great joy.

Did you get to watch it? The musical interlude between Biden's oath and Obama's was one of the Shaker hymns that Aaron Copeland incorporated into Appalachian Spring.

I ended up listening to it on public radio, while also reading some websites that were liveblogging it and occasionally refreshing the herkey-jerkey flash video on nytimes.com.
