Northern Region War Camp

Ivan and I are strongly considering going to Northern Region War Camp, provided I can get away from work by noon on Friday the 1st.
It seems odd that here it is nearly July already and we haven't even slept in a tent once.
I've never really been to Glenn Lynn. I know people have fun (lots of stories normally seem to involve drinking), but what is there to do besides fight, fence, or horse stuff? Is space tight? What is the camping like? (I've heard all about the bugs.) Is this a place where heavy duty cooking might take place? Ground fires?

I remember some A&S classes and display. Some merchants. There's a lake for swimming. Mostly I ended up hanging out.
Is space tight?
Yes. It's a good thing to have someone arriving early to claim space for your group.
What is the camping like? (I've heard all about the bugs.)
Lots and lots of bugs. Many mosquitoes. The last time there was a very wet spring there were clouds and a=swarms of mosquitoes down by the water.
There's a large bath house with modern plumbing -- I don't remember if it has showers, and the last time I was there, it had no mirrors.
Is this a place where heavy duty cooking might take place? Ground fires?
I think there are no fires allowed. I've used a charcoal brazier and propane stove there.

It is one of my favorite events for hanging out and singing and reconnecting with friends.

Is space tight?
We can reserve you space in the greater Sharc/vang/TOAD/etc. collective.
What is the camping like? (I've heard all about the bugs.)
Ground is flat. There are flush toilets and sinks, but really no shower facilities. If you prepare in advance, the bugs aren't all that bad.
Is this a place where heavy duty cooking might take place?
Oh yes. Every year we have the Sharc potluck at Glenn Linn. Hordes of food and feeding of random people ensue.
Ground fires?
Not sure. We rarely seem to have any, but that doesn't mean we can't.
Come on out, we'd love to see you!

but what is there to do besides fight, fence, or horse stuff?
Shopping. Hanging out. And if Susanna and Kai come, Middle Eastern dancing. ;) I frequently use it as a travel and get stuff done time. But I don't think I'll be there this year... the drive is not fun.

No ground fires. The only fires are ones that someone brought a fire holder for. I remember this rather explicitly, because when I drank citronella oil at Glen Lynn, the only person with activated charcoal was Fritz, who had a bowl of fire on a tripod like thing.
Also note - do not put citronella in Indian lamps. Even if it's buggy. A girl can get a reputation for doing things like that. ;)
Facilities involve two structures with flush toilets, and possibly porto-johns (don't remember). Can't remember showers. Remember facilities getting very yucky - messy, dirty, toilets clogged, etc. The second bath room was constructed a few years ago, but it didn't vastly improve much.
The site is near very little - maybe a grocery store and a breakfast place. Not much else - including cell phone connectivity. Kind of sucky for medical crises.

Date: 2005-06-22 10:33 pm (UTC)Fun at Glenn Linn
Date: 2005-06-22 11:07 pm (UTC)This is what Dr. Science and I usually do at Glenn Linn:
--Swim in the river
--Watch the horses (they get to play in the water, too--big fun :-D)
--Play shawms (and other instruments) with our friends, or just the two of us
--Go to the smokehouse and stock up on smoked meats for Pennsic
--Stroll around with Things One and Two (we get relatively few chances to do events with the dogs that just being there as a Pack is a lot of fun)
--Hang out with our friends, or chat with acquaintances
--grill on a small brazier
We're not really Party People, so that might sound a bit tame, but we enjoy the event enough to make the pilgrimage from NYC every summer :-)
