I bought fabric last night (two patterned flannels (funky stripes and Curious George) plus a chocolate brown rib knit that matches a color in both the flannels). Its all washed and dried and (provided Mr E falls asleep at anything approaching a reasonable hour) I'm set to try and make him some pants tonight. We'll see how it goes.
I'm realizing that I've never in my life sewn a knit before, so I'm a bit nervous about that. I don't have a fancy modern sewing machine or serger, and I'm hoping that won't be an issue. If anyone has tips for sewing a knit fabric I'm all ears.
Also, 80% of getting sewing done is having the machine in a place you're warm and happy. I'm not going to drag all the sewing stuff down to the dining room - too much mess and work - but I'm not looking forward to spending an evening in the cold room where the machine really lives.
Finally, after looking at "warm window" type fabrics and being horrified at the price I'm taking
fianaclare's excellent advice: I walked over to Marden's last night (think Big Lots but a bit seedier) and spent a whopping $8 on a 100% acrylic king-size blanket in beige that really is almost the same in terms of weight, content, color, and texture as the warm window stuff. I should easily be able to cut and hem it down to a curtain (or two) that will meet our needs. Next I just need to find a spring-loaded rod to put there (so we don't have to install hardware) and the tatty pink blanket will be history!
