I bought fabric last night (two patterned flannels (funky stripes and Curious George) plus a chocolate brown rib knit that matches a color in both the flannels). Its all washed and dried and (provided Mr E falls asleep at anything approaching a reasonable hour) I'm set to try and make him some pants tonight. We'll see how it goes.

I'm realizing that I've never in my life sewn a knit before, so I'm a bit nervous about that. I don't have a fancy modern sewing machine or serger, and I'm hoping that won't be an issue. If anyone has tips for sewing a knit fabric I'm all ears.

Also, 80% of getting sewing done is having the machine in a place you're warm and happy. I'm not going to drag all the sewing stuff down to the dining room - too much mess and work - but I'm not looking forward to spending an evening in the cold room where the machine really lives.

Finally, after looking at "warm window" type fabrics and being horrified at the price I'm taking [livejournal.com profile] fianaclare's excellent advice: I walked over to Marden's last night (think Big Lots but a bit seedier) and spent a whopping $8 on a 100% acrylic king-size blanket in beige that really is almost the same in terms of weight, content, color, and texture as the warm window stuff. I should easily be able to cut and hem it down to a curtain (or two) that will meet our needs. Next I just need to find a spring-loaded rod to put there (so we don't have to install hardware) and the tatty pink blanket will be history!

My hair is really bugging me today. No idea why. I finally found a clip deep in my backpack and now have it clipped up in what I'm fairly sure is an unattractive way. But at least its not bugging me.

I quoted John Updike today as my title quote for my last post, and now he's dead. Does anyone even notice the quotes I put as the subject of my posts?

Oh Yahoo News, how I hate you.

This news headline (if you're a parent you probably don't want to click) jumped out at my while I was trying to get the god damn weather forecast and has left me shaky and wanting to cry.

I can sort of understand people who hit a child once, or even twice. I can even sort of understand people who manage to depersonalize an entire race or tribe in order to kill individual members. But I cannot fathom this sort of evil.
