Friday, Josh and his dad (with lots of help from
kr4sh and Tim) started reroofing our garage. They tore off all the old roofing, trimmed back a tree or two, and had to do extensive replacement of wood on the roof where much of it had become rotten. Because they new the weather was going to turn, I understand they were on the roof until at least 9pm, with flashlights, finishing things up.
I, on the other hand, spent Friday running errands for and then attending my employer's annual awards dinner, where the featured keynote speaker was Congressman Dennis Kucinich. The dinner went well, despite the fact that I was made crazy by the fact that none of the people who were actually in charge seem to know anything about organizing and running a dinner for 350 people. Anyhow, one of the people who introduced Rep. Kucinich quoted Lincoln ... "When I hear a man preach, I like to see him act as if he were fighting bees," which was, I think, a pretty good description of the speech. I agree with a lot of what he says (although not all of it), but he impresses me most because he's not afraid to be himself, and he's actually been pretty successful just saying what he thinks rather than what he thinks he should say. I know that
kr4sh and
mylisant disagree with me about the idea that some people actually go into politics to try and serve the greater good, but I do believe that Kucinich is that rarity in the political world -- a principled, honest man.
The, of course, it rained all weekend. Saturday afternoon, Josh and his dad were back up on our roof, covering everything with tarps (green, blue, and silver) to protect and imprison the trying-to-escape tar paper. More rain on Sunday. More rain yesterday. Thankfully, today, bright blue skies. So, at 830 am, Josh's Dad arrives to help him spend the day fixing the tar paper that blew off on Saturday, then shingling the garage roof. Not Josh's favorite way to spend a day, but at the end of the day it will be done and then we can start cleaning and reorganizing the garage in earnest, rather than having to arrange the stuff inside around where the worst of the leaks are.
I realize that this was actually a pretty hard and time consuming job, but part of me wishes that doing the roof on the house was going to be anywhere near this easy.

My attention was drawn to this page via a post on Metafilter, and in particular this quote in the comments:
"Made more shocking by the casual mentions of tragedies -- her mother killed by german police while walking to work, her father dying from a brutal beating at a german's hands -- people were killed then like people catch cold today."
