I constantly marvel at them, at how apt they are, and I wonder where in the world you find them. :-)

I must admit, I could never stomach Updike's work. I used to read the New Yorker, cover to cover, and I never checked who the author was. But I often would stumble through a chunk of turgid prose, halt, and check the masthead. Sure enough...

(OK, the Art Critic is a popinjay too. But at least he's interesting.)
