I have all the stuff to make Josh new clothes for Coronation. Last night I was complaining I couldn't get any work done because this room is such a cluttered disaster, but that, I realize, is only half the problem:
You see, I'm a seamstress of necessity rather than gift or talent. I'm not very good at sewing, and I don't really enjoy it.
I know how to make a tunic (in an inauthentic way) that Josh is comfortable in and looks good on him. But, increasingly, I'm seeing discussion on SCA East and elsewhere (including private blogs) on how this isn't 'good enough'. That, despite making him some very serviceable clothing over the years, to really do this "right" I should be making him cut-and-sewn tunics in a more "authentic" style.
I did try to do this with a new tunic I made for Panteria, but the results were an ill-fitting disaster. He wasn't comfortable in it, so he never wore it. Four yards of beautiful blanket weight wool gone to waste, more or less. (I used Cynthia's pattern, FYI. Its not her fault I can't sew. I've also read all this (and a lot more) since he's technically doing 10th century Rus.)
So now I have about $80 worth of linen lying on the ironing board, and about twenty yards of store-bought trim. And I'm struggling with what to do ... make what I know, what he likes to wear, what I am sure will work, but which is not authentic? Or try another cut-and-sewn style, and possibly waste the fabric on something that won't fit. And, while I wouldn't say I'm paralyzed by the choice, I would say that I realized this morning that the sight internal conflict over what to do is enough to keep me from cutting into it.
