By accident (I swear) stayed up last night until about 330 am making a tunic for Josh and two tunics for E. When I finished the last one and looked at the clock - I had thought it was about 130, not after 3. (But that does explain the singing bird that was outside the window....) I also spent some time getting the upstairs sewing space at least workable enough that I can work up there. Its not great, but I can leave it set up (which I cannot do at the dining room table) so I might get more done if I don't have to set up the machine each time.
For the first time in probably a dozen years I made a "real" (ie: pieced) tunic, using Cynthia's instructions on the web. (I'm always amused when I Google something and someone I know is the first hit on the topic.) I know that doing it this way makes for less waste (and I can tell by the scraps on my floor, as well) but it also take about three times longer than making a "Tee" tunic. Also, I'm not sure that its going to fit him the way he's used to -- for some reason the sleeves are about three inches too long.
One of E's tunics fits fine, but the other (the black wool one, the warm one, the one that matches the one I made for his father) is too small in a weird way ... somehow I cut it so that it nips in a bit at the waist, and so it will fit him once its on, I can't get his arms into it (ie: get it past his shoulders). Also, he freaked out when we tried it on him this morning, because he was stuck in it, and he started to cry and say "I can't see, I can't see" which is never good. I don't really want to take it apart (it has a bunch of trim at the bottom hem, for one thing), but I don't think I have enough of the wool to make an entire new one.
Also, I learned that if you can't find your seam ripper, a screwdriver will do in a pinch.
Back to packing.....
