anastasiav: (Obama = Hope)
I still feel giddy from yesterday. Is that Hope? Is this what Hope feels like? If so, I like it. I finally understand the impulse of folks in the '50's and '60's to hang pictures of King and Kennedy in the kitchen. (Josh says I can't though. Also, even knock off copies of the HOPE collage have quintupled in cost on eBay.)

Obama wore 'bullet-resistant clothing' for most of the day. (More from Law Enforcement News)

I'm a big fan of the gold dress Mrs. Obama wore during the day, but her evening choice didn't thrill me. I think it was unflattering on her upper body, but more than anything she seemed to be fussing with the skirt all night long (and apparently the President stepped on it more than once while they were walking or dancing). As I was watching them visit ball after ball after ball I got the overwhelming feeling that she just wasn't comfortable in the dress - she kept futzing with it and rearranging it. I felt bad for her - on an evening like that she should have been able to think about nothing other than the moment, rather than being constantly worried about her skirt.

I also was very disappointed in the coverage of the parade. All these networks cover the Macy's Parade, they know how to cover a parade. I wanted the same kind of coverage here -- I wanted to know who these bands and groups were, what their story was, how they were chosen, how they had sold cookies to pay for their trip. This was their big moment, and I think the television coverage overall completely shortchanged them. Here's some 'public interest' coverage and this is an alphabetical list of groups that were invited. This AP Article just skims the surface.

Totally unrelated, here's a great discussion of Miss Hinchcliffe and Miss Murgatroyd, their 'Boston Marriage', and the culture of same-sex relationships as depicted in Agatha Christie's A Murder is Announced.

This is the sight that awaited us on Monday. Be sure to check out how deep the shovel goes into the snow when Josh clears off the steps.
