Who the hell is Mike Gravel?

I have no idea who Mike Gravel is. Kucinich is an interesting man (I've been lucky enough to meet him twice), but unelectable. I won't vote for John Edwards, although I don't think he'd make a bad president. Obama, therefore, seems to be the man for me. (He was, anyhow.)
One thing I really dislike about living so close to New Hampshire is that we are subjected to a sort of "blast radius" of the avalanche of political ads, without being able to actually vote or anything. I can't even imagine how bad the media bombardment must be for actual voters in the state.
