Random Thoughts on Crown Tournament
Oct. 16th, 2005 04:08 pmIt was nice to see all those people. I'm sort of glad I won't see many of them again until Birka. I think its strange that I see people who live in New Jersey more often than I see people who live in South Portland. I should work on changing that.
I should have brought a wider variety of possible outfits. Hopefully, this will teach Ivan never to mock me for bringing more than one set of garb to an event again.
I'm glad I stayed for court. I wish someone had told us. I wish more people had been there.
I thought the finals were boring, and somewhat ugly, not "incredible marathon of style and grace" that everyone else seems to think it was. Most of the fighter types I know who watched it agree with me (or, I guess, I agree with them). I'm surprised that Darius didn't follow the traditional "change weapons forms for each bout" format -- it would have made things go a lot faster and made things more interesting for "the crowd assembled". It might have also kept Balfar from getting conked in the head, since I bet it was as boring for the marshals to watch as it was for everyone else. And, truthfully, once it got down to Brion and Lucan, I didn't much care who won. They'll both do what I expect a King to do -- get allies, keep the awards flow coming, keep things moving.
There are a number of people I wish I had spent more time with, but it was far too squishy to walk around.
Why do I keep bringing my cameras and then never taking a single photo?
Dinner with Julian and Carolyne afterwards was great fun, and great catch-up. Shiny diners can never fail you for a good meal. The drive home went smoothly despite the late hour (we arrived home at 3am almost on the dot), and it reminded me greatly of the days when Ivan was still "on the circut" and we'd day trip these things.
To the LJ reader who paid me the great complement: Thanks! I'm sorry I didn't get to talk to you more. I really did think you looked great, and remarked upon it to several people.
Ivan drew Duke Gregor in the first round, and died when Gregor hit him in the head. Afterwards, several people told him it looked very light. He said "Well, it was very light. But it was completely clean and I made no attempt to block it, so I took it. If I had been standing on the sidelines and saw someone else recieve that shot and not take it, I would have wondered why the heck the didn't take the shot." This is why I love him. This is also why he'll never win a Crown. And I'm so very ok with that.
