This journal, one year ago today.

(Yes, I'm going somewhere with this, honest.)

Yesterday was a day that didn't turn out like I planned. I won't go into the things we didn't do.

E woke up around 700 am and played! By himself! In his crib! For an entire hour! He finally started to cry a few minutes past 800 am, 'cause his diaper was poopy. But sleeping (ok, dozing) until 8 was total luxury.

Josh made scrambled eggs for he and E for breakfast. E lurves his scrambled eggs. If we can't get him to eat anything else, we can always get him to eat eggs (with a bit of ham and cheese mixed in, of course). Also, Josh bought these things called "Baby Bananas" which are little tiny fully-formed completely ripe bananas. Baby-size Bananas, one might say. E is adorable eating them - we just peel them mostly and he holds the peel and eats them, just like a grown person would do with a "real" banana. Its about the most adorable thing, only eclipsed by the fact that he's somehow learned to run his finger across his lips and hum and so make the sort of "buh-buh buh-buh buh-buh" noise that one might associate with someone describing losing their mind. Fortunately he hasn't combined the two yet.

We ended up doing some cleaning (and napping. Family nap time is a good thing) in the morning, then going up to see Josh's sister in the afternoon. While there, Josh and I got to noodle around with Dead Rising, in which I discovered that I don't get to hit Zombies in the head with 2x4's nearly often enough.

In the evening, we headed off to Freeport for fireworks. It was the L.L.Bean 95th Anniversary celebration or somesuch, and they had promised "one of the largest Fireworks displays in Maine - ever". Also, there was a free concert in the park - Robert Cray, I believe. So, an enormous crowd. Yet somehow we managed to a) find a decent parking space, then b) walk over to the school where the fireworks were being held and find an excellent spot on the lawn. It was drizzly, which made some number of people leave, but the concert was still packed when we went by. The fireworks were ... good. Not amazing, but pretty good. (The ill-fated ones at Pennsic that year were better and still set the "gold standard" for me as to what a great fireworks show should be.)

I was, of course, looking forward to seeing what E would think of the fireworks. He ended up falling asleep in the car on the way there, then napped on his dad's shoulder even after we took him out of the car, and didn't wake up properly until we were seated on the grass. He sat on my lap for the entire show with a very odd look on his face - he didn't seem scared really (although he did make sure to keep in physical contact with me or his father at all times) and always seemed interested, but he had this odd little frown on his face during the whole thing. No smiling, none of the constant stream of babble we're used to. Just great big eyes and a very serious look. He fell asleep again directly afterwards, on the way to the car. One wonders if he thought he were dreaming.

Getting ready for (and getting to) GNE is harder than it looks. Tonight I'm (prays) going to make E a couple more tunics while Josh goes to the Province meeting. Our plan is to pack the van on Tuesday night, have Josh go up and set up during the day on Thursday, I pick up E from daycare Thursday afternoon and we go up, we all stay on-site Thursday night, then I go back to Portland to work (payroll day, you know) on Friday, then I return to site on Friday night for the weekend. Since I have totally no responsibilities at the event itself I'm trying to think of some way to keep myself occupied while chasing the boy (as though that isn't work enough!). Maybe I'll spend the day cooking something.... It would have been helpful if my next payday was before GNE and not after it, however. I really hate this every-two-weeks pay schedule. I'll never get used to it. I know why it is the way it is, but getting a direct-deposit infusion of cash every Friday has kind of ... spoiled me, I guess.
